Presto's Fry Daddy 05420 electric deep fat fryer is little more than a bucket with a heating element and inherits much of its retro styling from its 70's predecessor. But what it lacks in hi-tech features it more than makes up for in ease of use. The Fry Daddy is simple, compact and economical, and this makes it one of our top picks. If you're one of those people who hates to waste cooking oil the Fry Daddy works quite happily on just 3-4 cups. An ideal capacity if you don't need to fry large batches and a big reduction from the typical size found on most other fryers. Over time this fact alone will more than pay for the Fry Daddy outright. The 'keep-it-simple' approach continues with the controls. The Fry Daddy has no temperature guage or indicator light. Just plug it in and wait about 10 minutes for the oil to reach the correct temperature, which is factory set to top out at around 350F. If you intend on re-using the oil just let the fryer cool and then use the included snap-on lid and you can store the oil in the fryer. No need to mess with draining and storing it separately. Very convenient. All surfaces are nonstick for quick cleanup but the Fry Daddy is NOT dishwasher safe. Since the heating element is permanently part of the fryer it cannot be completely immersed in water. Also the exterior walls get very hot (this is not a cool-touch model) so be careful, especially if you have young children nearby. We also noticed the bottom gets hot as well. Make sure you position it on a heat resistant surface before use. The plastic snap-on lid is not designed to be used when the fryer is in operation so we recommend a separate splash guard to prevent grease splatter from getting all over the place.
